Lower Face

Improving the lower face

As collagen and elastin production slow as we get older and gravity takes its toll, the signs of ageing become apparent on the lower face. Many of our clients have expressed concerns with nose-to-mouth and mouth-to-chin lines as well as loss of plumpness in the cheek area.

We use dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections to target these concerns. Dr James Willis has a wealth of experience and expertise in creating natural-looking results through subtle and precise use of the right products in the right facial areas.*

Nose-to-mouth (nasolabial) lines

Nasolabial lines are the skin folds that run from each side of the nose to the corners of the mouth. They tend to separate the cheeks from the upper lip and are commonly referred to as nasolabial folds or lines.

Nasolabial lines can appear at an early age and make even a young, beautiful person look older than they are. As we age, the skin loses elastin and collagen and the cell turnover rate slows down. These folds or lines will appear deeper and wider, and in turn this can give a less youthful appearance. A common procedure and very effective method of restoring a more youthful look is to add volume to these folds, smoothing the grooves and rejuvenating the face using dermal fillers.*

Another factor in the increasing appearance of these folds is the inevitable way that the cheeks become heavier due to gravity’s effects and the natural ‘bounce’ of the skin’s structure. This can result in the cheeks dropping and sometimes causing a fold. Even though a person may be smiling and feeling happy they often look ‘down’ which can lead to low self–confidence and low self-esteem. Dermal fillers can help to restore volume in the area creating natural-looking results which last between 6 to 9 months.

Mouth-to-chin (marionette) lines

Marionette lines are deep vertical lines that extend downwards from the corners of the mouth. They get their name because they look like the lines seen on a marionette’s mouth. Many people are particularly self-conscious about their marionette lines because they give the face a turned-down, sad appearance.

By treating the corners of the mouth with anti-wrinkle injections, we can improve the appearance of marionette lines and help reduce that sad, tired look which may be ageing your face.

Cheek bone augmentation and cheek enhancement

The cheek bone can be enhanced using dermal fillers. This is usually in 3 sites: laterally from just under the corner of the eye, secondly at the point of maximum curvature and thirdly in the mid-pupil line in the flattened area of the ‘tear trough’.

The effect is very flattering and sculpts the face, enhancing the ‘triangle of youth’: broadening the top of the triangle. The effect is similar to the look of the actress Cameron Diaz who has naturally occurring well-defined cheekbones.*

Smile lines on the cheek can be treated with expert and delicate use of micro anti-wrinkle injections.*

Your questions answered

What are anti-wrinkle injections?

Anti-wrinkle injections are made from a protein that occurs naturally in bacterium. It relaxes facial muscles by interacting with nerve endings to prevent the release of the compound that triggers muscle contractions. This can help to soften fine lines and wrinkles including marionette lines.*

How long does the treatment take with Dr James Willis?

Your initial complimentary consultation with Dr James Willis is open ended but usually takes about half an hour. The actual anti-wrinkle injection treatment often takes less than 10 minutes.

If you’re a new client, we will usually invite you to return for a review after 2 weeks.

What improvements will I see after treatment?

It will take around 5 days to begin to see results such as wrinkles appearing softer and less obvious in treated areas. Your face will look younger and more relaxed. Improvements optimise after about a fortnight.*

How long will results last?

The effects of your treatment should last between 3 to 6 months, depending on your individual response. You may then need a top-up treatment. Subsequent treatments tend to last longer. Dr James Willis will talk through this during your free consultation.

Is the treatment painful?

No. The medication is injected in very small doses with an ultra-fine needle. It is mildly uncomfortable and doesn’t need any anaesthetic. However, some clients ask us to use a topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) such as Emla cream. Dr James Willis is happy to do this if you prefer.

Will it leave my face frozen and without expression?

No. We assess the optimum dose to produce a relaxed soft appearance but you will still have facial expression and movement.

Are there any side effects?

Generally, no. Some clients experience slight bruising or swelling immediately after treatment. We will discuss this in detail with you at the time of your consultation.

Is there anything that I should or shouldn’t do after anti-wrinkle injection treatment?

You should avoid touching the treated area for a few hours. You will need to keep upright immediately after treatment and it is helpful to exercise the treated muscles during the first few hours. The dos and don’ts will be explained in detail during your assessment.

Can Dr James Willis combine anti-wrinkle injections and dermal-filler treatments?

Yes. Dr James Willis often provides an integrated treatment plan combining the 2 treatments. He will talk through the potential options during your consultation.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are gels made from hyaluronic acid (a naturally-occurring substance that helps to maintain healthy skin). When injected they can help to replace lost volume, add contour and definition, smooth lines and wrinkles and restore a more youthful look.*

What happens to the dermal filler after it’s been injected?

Over time, the dermal filler will break down naturally and be reabsorbed by the body.

Which areas can Dr James Willis treat with dermal fillers?

This versatile treatment can be used for the following:

  1. Nose-to-mouth lines
  2. Lip contour and volume for plumper lips
  3. Marionette lines (from the corners of the mouth to the chin)
  4. Enhancing the cheeks
  5. Deeper glabella (frown) and forehead lines
  6. Crow’s feet around the eyes.
  7. Jawline refining
  8. Nose reshaping

How long does the treatment take?

It takes about 20 minutes depending on the area being treated.

What results will I see immediately after my dermal filler treatment?

The result is immediate. Your skin will appear younger and smoother.

How long will the results last?

Results may last for 6 to 9 months depending on the product and the areas being treated. Subsequent treatments tend to last a little longer.* Dr James Willis will talk through this during your free consultation.

Is the treatment painful?

No, Dr James Willis is an expert in gentle injecting techniques. Some dermal fillers contain anaesthetic to reduce discomfort further still. For dermal-filler treatment around the lips and mouth, we tend to use local anaesthetic to completely numb the area. This is the same feeling that you would have with a dental anaesthetic.

Are there any side effects?

Initially, there is a little redness and swelling that usually subsides after 12 hours. You may experience some bruising, which subsides over time. These side effects are all quite normal.

What our clients say

  • “The folds running from my nose to mouth were so obvious. They started to show in my early 30s and have just got worse over time. I’m so pleased I came to see Dr Willis – he was easy to talk to and took the time to listen to all my concerns. The results are wonderful and I’ll definitely be back for more treatment in a few months’ time.”

    Nicola Wild

  • “I couldn’t really believe how my cheeks had hollowed over time – it was so ageing. I felt nervous about having dermal fillers but the treatment has really put the spring back in my step. My face looks fuller and plumper again. Thank you.”
