Treating medical conditions

Many people are unaware of how medical injections can be effective and innovative treatment for a range of medical conditions. Dr James Willis is experienced in using these injections for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), bruxism (teeth clenching), migraine, pain and depression.

A one-to-one and in-depth consultation will help establish the best treatment plan for optimum results. The doctor will talk through all aspects of your condition and treatment so that you can make an informed decision.

Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

Hyperhidrosis is characterised by excessive sweating that affects the underarms, hands, feet and face. It’s a very real problem for some people, so much so that it prevents a normal social life. Medical injections can effectively relieve these symptoms.

Small and precise injections are gently made into the treatment area. The toxin in the injection blocks the chemical at nerve endings which prompts sweat glands to work. Sweating is considerably reduced with results lasting for several months. The treatment can be repeated when sweating begins to increase.*

Teeth clenching (bruxism), migraine and facial pain

Facial pain is often misdiagnosed as migraine when, in fact, it is caused by muscle spasm. Treatment of the affected muscles with medical injections can often resolve symptoms. The treatment regime may also involve reducing clenching of the teeth with a soft dental splint. Dr James Willis has experience in this field and often works in partnership with a consultant specialist at a pain clinic.

Muscle tension and pain

Pain is controlled by a neurotransmitter in the body known as substance P, and medical injections can help to inhibit the release of this substance. Medical injections have been documented for many years as a treatment for pain, and Dr James Willis has treated many clients with different types of pain.

A 30-year-old patient for example had suffered chronic back pain for a decade. Medical injections made into the muscle either side of the spinal column gave a marked improvement while also increasing mobility.* Whilst the treatment has given relief in all cases, this is in no way a diagnosis for pain of unknown reasons.

Scientists believe emotions can be ‘reverse engineered’ — if a patient is prevented from frowning, their brain may think there is nothing to worry about.

“The basic principle is that there is feedback from the body to the brain so the brain always knows what the body is doing,” said Marc Axel Wollmer, the psychiatrist in charge of the trials being held jointly at Basle University, Switzerland, and Hanover University, Germany.

“If we have an emotion like joy or grief, we also have a facial expression that corresponds,” he said. “Studies indicate that if we deliberately produce a facial expression, there is a change in feeling.” Thus if one is prevented from frowning through medical injections, the theory suggests that we are less likely to feel depressed. The theory is called ‘facial feedback hypothesis’. Another example is that someone who is forced to smile at a social event where the person is feeling uncomfortable may find he or she enjoys it more. An initial experiment by another team used protein injections on 10 depressed patients. After 2 months, 9 were no longer depressed and the 10th patient reported an improvement in mood.*

Your questions answered

What conditions can be treated with medical injections?

We can treat migraine, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), depression and teeth clenching (bruxism). Where there is muscle tension, we can relax it.* We do not provide a diagnosis for pain or causes of muscle tension. However we can provide a possible solution to ease the symptoms.

Do I need a referral to have medical injections?

No, Dr James Willis can prescribe the treatment once we have carried out an assessment. It is a safe and controlled medication for which we have over 20 years’ experience in the field. We can of course receive referrals from practitioners who are not able to provide medical injections.

What is hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating?

Normal sweating helps to keep the body’s temperature steady in hot weather, during a high temperature (fever), or when exercising. Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) means that you sweat much more than normal. Even when you are not hot, anxious, or exercising, you produce a lot of sweat.

Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) is a common problem that affects the underarms, face, palms of the hands and soles of the feet. It can be distressing and can have a serious impact on your life. In some cases, affected people avoid social contact with others because of embarrassment about the problem. However, the condition is usually treatable.

How do medical injections help?

The injections stop the nerves in the skin that control the sweat glands from working. Treatment consists of many small injections just under the skin in the affected areas

Are results permanent?

No, medical injections are a temporary solution. Treatment for excessive sweating lasts 141 days to 152 days according to the studies, although some clients report results lasting for around 7 months or longer.*

Do I need to continue with other therapies?

Yes. If you are already having treatment for muscle-tension, it is advisable to continue to do so. Pain control with medical injections is not always a complete cure but can ease symptoms dramatically.*

Do I need to change my medication?

At the consultation, we will go through a detailed medical history with you. This includes any drug interactions. There are no total drug contraindications, but there may be some medication doses that might need to be adjusted.

How much is a consultation?

We offer free consultations with no obligation. We can also carry out treatment at this same appointment should you wish to do so.

Are there any side effects?

Generally, no. Some clients experience slight bruising or swelling immediately after treatment. We will discuss this in detail with you at the time of your consultation.
